Department in Depth

The Biochemistry Department is part of the LabMed Directorate at St. James’s Hospital. The Department provides a comprehensive service to the hospital as well as to many outside institutions, General Practitioners and hospitals nationwide.  The department is located on the ground floor of the Central Pathology Laboratory at the eastern end of the hospital campus, near the Luas stop.  The department currently carries out approximately 5.5 million laboratory tests annually (2011).  The service includes high volume, essential routine tests and more specialised analyses.  A full out of hours emergency service is also provided. A full listing of the current test repertoire is given in our user handbook and the tests available out of hours indicated.

The department is organised into various sections.  The sections are Core laboratory (General chemistries and Endocrinology), additional chemistries  laboratory (back lab), vitamins laboratory, porphyrins laboratory, bone/GI laboratory, external referral analyses, and there is an endocrinology service, which has produced a separate user handbook. Opening hours for all sections are from 08:00 to 20:00 hours, Monday to Friday. There is a restricted service from 09:00 to13:00 hours on Saturdays.  An emergency service for a restricted range of urgent analyses is available outside these hours and on Sundays and public holidays.
