St. James’s Hospital continues to plan and deliver care to our patients in accordance with national guidelines.

In order to protect our patients and staff we have had to limit or change some of our services at this time. Please see updated information below related to appointments and admissions.

Visiting Restrictions

Visiting restrictions are in place at St James’s Hospital for the safety of our patients, staff and community to reduce the further spread of COVID-19 infection. This means that the hospital is closed to all visitors, except in exceptional clinical circumstances, where very limited visiting may be arranged by prior agreement with the Nurse in Charge on the ward.

The hospital regrets any upset that this is causing to our patients and their families, however, these restrictions are necessary to minimise the risk of transmission of COVID-19.

We are encouraging families and loved ones of our patients to keep in touch with them as much as possible by phone, through video calls and more traditional ways like letters or cards. Devices are available on the wards to facilitate phone and video calls for patients who require assistance or don’t have access to a phone. Please contact the ward to arrange this.

If you are a permitted visitor and are experiencing symptoms including cough, shortness of breath, high temperature and loss or change to your sense of taste or smell, please do not visit St James’s Hospital. Hand Hygiene

Our staff are working extremely hard to deal with the COVID-19 virus and to care for all our patients currently in the hospital. We are employing all infection control measures and every effort is being made to manage and control the spread of the virus.

Outpatient appointments

We are starting to call patients back into our outpatient services.  If you have an appointment with us, please do not attend unless we have contacted you.

To ensure patient safety and to comply with social distancing, please do not arrive early for your appointment, but arrive on time.

Please be aware that you may have to enter the hospital via  a different entrance point, not the main entrance.

If you believe you have COVID-19 symptoms please do not attend your outpatient appointment and contact your GP.

Day case and endoscopy appointments

All non-essential endoscopy and day case procedures and surgeries (medical and surgical) are postponed until further notice. Please do not come to the Hospital for an appointment unless you are contacted by us and asked to attend.

Inpatient admissions

All non-urgent admissions to the hospital are postponed. You will be contacted by the Hospital’s Admissions Office to reschedule.
