Department in Depth

The Cardiology Department consists of 6 full time Consultant Cardiologists providing services on an Inpatient, Day case and Outpatient basis while also providing a Supra Regional Service for centres though out Ireland.  Cardio-Thoracic conferences are held twice weekly to discuss the management of both inpatient and patents referred from other centres.

The Cardiology Service provides optimum post procedure care to all patients and relevant follow up as necessary. After care programmes include the Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme which has helps to improve the quality of life of cardiac patients.  The Cardiac Rehabilitation Department is situated in the Physio Department which is on the first right at the Rialto entrance to the hospital

We also manage a number of patients through the Clinical Care Programmes which includes the Heart Support Programme. This 12 week structured programme enables patients to closely monitor and manage their symptoms with the objective of improved quality of life.   The Heart Support Unit is situated on the ground floor beside the Chest Pain Assessment Unit.

Cardiac Catheterisation Lab

St. James’s Cardiac Catheterisation Lab (CCL) is committed to providing safe, effective and high quality care to persons requiring specialist Interventional Cardiology procedures electively or in an emergency situation. St James’s Hospital is one of the designated Primary PCI centres for the Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) Clinical Care programme and provides 24 hour cover for these patients.

The Catherisation lab is situated on the Ground floor of the main hospital across from the X-ray Department. There are two Cardiac Cath Labs of which we perform in excess of 5,000 procedures annually.  The CCL & Cardiac Day-care Unit undertakes pre-procedural assessment, interventional procedures and recovery for emergency and elective patients undergoing a number of cardiology procedures including:

Coronary Angiogram
Electrophysiology Studies (EPS) / Catheter Ablation
Reveal Device / Loop Recorder insertion Reveal Device  
Permanent Pacemaker (PPM) Insertion Pacemaker
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implant (TAVI)  
• Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Insertion 
Aortic and Mitral Balloon Valvuloplasty  
• Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) / Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closures  
• Graft Studies   
• Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and Coronary Stenting 
• Right and Left Heart Studies
• Aortogram
• Venogram

The function of the CCL is to provide planned day procedures and emergency procedures to both inpatient and outpatient hospital referrals. Normal working hours operate from Monday to Friday. 24 hour cover is provided to cater for acute coronary emergencies.

If you are booked in for a procedure a detailed letter will be sent to you with information on what to expect during the procedure. Please read the enclosed instructions very carefully. You need to contact the Cardiac Co-ordinator after you have received your appointment to confirm you will be able to attend on the day. Please ensure that you have any blood tests carried out prior to your procedure if they have been requested, otherwise your procedure may be cancelled.

If you are taking Warfarin, Rivoroxaban (Xarelto), Apixaban (Eliquis) or Dabigatran (Pradaxa) which are blood thinners please contact the Cardiology Co-ordinator immediately.

Diagnostic Cardiology

The department performs a large number of minor investigations for both inpatient and OPD departments which includes a comprehensive Echo Service. We provide a same day service for cardiology clinics for ECG, exercise stress tests, pacemaker and ICD checks and echocardiograms. We currently perform in excess of 12,000 investigations per year.  The Cardiac Diagnostic Department is based on the ground floor of the main hospital and is beside the Cardiac Catherization Laboratory. Investigations include:

• Cardiac Stress testing
• Dobutamine stress echo
• Echocardiogram 
• Trans Oesophageal Echo  
• Electrocardiogram (ECG)  
• Event monitor 
• Holter monitor  
• Pacemaker checks 
• Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Checks 
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging in CAMI Unit
