Centre for Learning & Development

Department in Depth

The planning and provision of continuing education and training programmes is required primarily to support clinicians and all St James’s staff in the delivery of excellence in relation to patient and service need in a rapidly changing complex health care environment.

The Centre’s Prospectus / Programme of Learning and Development Opportunities is the culmination of an annual learning needs analysis and collaborative planning, involving interaction with a wide variety of staff and managers at all levels in the organisation, within the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin and the wider community.

A number of our programmes are open to non St James’s Hospital Staff – See prospectus
Continuing education and training along with research, practice development and innovation are dynamic components of the centre’s strategic function. While a number of programmes are dedicated to ensuring staff participate in education and training required by legislation and by the hospital’s own policies and accreditation processes, the centre is also very much focused on providing continuing education and training which directly impact on service and practice development initiatives and the application of evidence based practice.

The CLD is committed to fostering innovation in the provision of learning opportunities and teaching methods. In recognising the changing environment in which we operate and the challenges often associated with releasing staff for education / training, an eLearning / blended learning project was launched through the Centre in 2009 and is part of our vision and overall strategy in adapting our programmes to the learner’s needs.

As the CLD is an evolving structure, it is expected that ongoing development will be a feature of its role and function. We will continue to plan, develop, implement and evaluate a broad and balanced prospectus of quality blended education and training programmes in meeting the learning and development needs of the organisation and wider community – now and into the future.
