Clinical Nutrition

Our dietetic outpatient clinics are held in different areas of the hospital; Suite 2 in the outpatients department (in the main hospital), the diabetic day centre (in Hospital 5) and GEMS outpatients, (Route 2 in the main hospital). Please check your appointment card to see where your appointment will be.

Referral Procedure

All patients referred to the Department of Clinical Nutrition must be under the care of a St James’s Hospital consultant. Referrals are accepted from St James’s medical, nursing and multidisciplinary team staff. Unfortunately referrals from G.Ps cannot be accepted. Local Community Nutrition and Dietetic Services may be available for patients under the care of their G.P. 

Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes can self-register for the X-PERT Diabetes course by booking online at The XPERT programme is available in 18 counties across the country. If the XPERT programme is not available in the county where you lve, you can still contact your local Health Office for information on diabetes services. 

Appointment Instructions

If you are unable to attend your appointment for any reason, please contact us by phone or email at least 48 hours in advance. There is a waiting list to attend the dietitian. By cancelling your appointment in advance we can offer this appointment to another person. If you cancel three appointments within two years, you will be discharged from service.

If you do not attend your appointment, a further appointment will not be scheduled unless you contact the department within 2 weeks to request another appointment.
