Colorectal Cancer

What we do

Two Colorectal Consultant Surgeons, Mr. R B Stephens and Mr. B J Mehigan provide specialised joint care to all inpatients, working as an integrated team with a senior and junior registrar. There is a strong medical gastroenterology team and excellent diagnostic facilities in new state-of-the-art facilities. This team based care includes ward rounds and operating lists and flexible outpatient’s clinics as envisaged in 2001 by the Department of Health Report ‘Quality and Fairness - A Health System for You’

Recently Mr. Dermot Hehir has come on board the team with his Tullamore patients having their rectal cancer surgery performed at St. James’s Hospital by Mr. Hehir.

Colorectal Cancer Programme-Key Points

  • Weekly multidisciplinary team meeting where all cases are discussed
  • In 2007, St. James’s diagnosed or treated 155 new colorectal cancers (Ref. Cancer Audit Programme, SJH)
  • Colorectal cancer unit accredited by the ACPGBI (www.acpgbi.org.uk )
  • Colorectal cancer clinical audit system established since 2001
  • Standards defined and linked with the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI), and audit  shared with this association
  • High volume centre for colorectal diseases, with laparoscopic approaches now established within the unit
  • Specialist medical oncologist
  • Specialist radiation oncologist
  • Full time colorectal cancer data manager
  • Full time colorectal cancer nurse co-ordinator
  • Two full time stoma care clinical nurse specialists
  • Genetic counseling service provided by Specialist Nurse Practitioner

Appointment Instructions

New Patient Appointments: new patients requiring appointments must submit a referral from their GP / Consultant. New referrals are prioritized by a consultant surgeon and an appropriate appointment will be scheduled for the patient. Patients will be notified of their appointment date by post or by telephone.

Return Patient Appointments can be made at the time of attendance at the clinic or by calling: (01) 4162157 or Mr Mehigan (01) 4162361.

Referral Procedures

Referrals are to be made by letter or fax - Completed referrals should be posted or faxed directly to the Department.
