The Haematology Laboratory is part of the Laboratory Medicine Directorate in St. James’s Hospital. The department’s work involves the laboratory diagnosis, monitoring and therapy of haematological conditions such as leukaemia, anaemia and haemophilia. It is part of the LabMed Directorate, supports the National Adult Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Centre and the National Centre for Hereditary Coagulation Disorders (NCHCD) at St James’s hospital and provides a comprehensive blood testing service to the hospital and to general practitioners and hospitals nationwide. It is the largest such department in the Republic of Ireland and includes the Haematology Laboratory, Cryobiology Stem Cell Facility and Coagulation Laboratory . The department has held CPA (UK) accreditation since 2003.

Requests for further testing on samples may be possible on a case-by-case basis depending on the test required, the stability of the analyte and the length of time sample is retained. Please contact the relevant haematology Laboratory section as soon as possible if additional tests are required.

A service level agreement (SLA) must be in place between external agencies and St James's Hospital prior to referral of samples for testing in the Haematology Laboratory.
