Laboratory Medicine Directorate

What we do

The laboratory provides a wide range of laboratory examinations including scientific and clinical advisory services to help in the diagnosis of illnesses and the monitoring of the treatment of those illnesses. The laboratory is divided into six main scientific and clinical specialties and two national reference laboratories which are:

• Biochemistry
• Haematology (incorporating Cryobiology and Coagulation)
• Microbiology
• Histopathology (incorporating Cytopathology)
• Immunology
• Transfusion
• National MRSA Reference Laboratory
• Irish Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory

These departments carry out a wide range of examinations (tests) varying from simple to complex and report results in a timely manner to assist clinicians in management of their patients. LabMed User Guide
