Lung Cancer

What we do

The lung cancer team at St. James’s Hospital sees approximately 25% of National lung cancer patients for diagnosis and or treatment, and close to 50% of National surgical resections (the principal curative treatment) for lung cancer are carried out at St. James’s Hospital (Ref. Six Year Audit Report, St. James’s Hospital 2001-2006)

Lung Cancer Programme-Key Points

  • Rapid access diagnostic bronchoscopy (all procedures on a “next-list” basis-no waiting list)
  • ‘One stop’ diagnosis and staging for lung cancer available
  • In 2007, St. James’s diagnosed or treated 417 new lung cancers.(Ref. Cancer Audit Programme, St. James’s Hospital)
  • PET/ MRI scanner available
  • Long established weekly multidisciplinary team meeting, with MDT approach to management of all patients.  This includes regular telelink with Mullingar, Tullamore and Letterkenny.  The MDT is organized by a full time MDT coordinator.
  • National Cardiac Unit based at St. James’s Hospital
  • Dedicated pulmonary cytohistopathologists
  • Dedicated medical oncologist for lung cancer, who is chair of the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) and an international opinion leader in lung cancer
  • Lung cancer data manager who manages lung cancer database
  • Lung cancer nurse co-ordinator
  • Lung cancer clinical trials, translational studies and bio-bank facilities are available
  • Research: extensive bench-to-bedside lung cancer research programme
