Nuclear medicine is a safe, painless, and cost-effective way of gathering information that may otherwise be unavailable or require a more difficult diagnostic test. Nuclear medicine tests are extreme sensitivity to abnormalities in an organ's structure and function and often identify abnormalities very early in the progression of a disease long before some medical problems are apparent with other diagnostic tests. This early detection allows a disease to be treated early in its course when there may be a better prognosis.
The nuclear medicine department in St James's Hospital offers the full range of diagnostic tests available in the speciality, including skeletal scintigraphy, brain perfusion imaging for dementia and Parkinson's disease, pulmonary and cardiac perfusion imaging, tumour imaging and lymphoscintigraphy. We have two state-of -the-art SPECT/CT scanners and have close links with the on-site PET/CT unit.
Please see Department in Depth for information on specfic scans.
