The unit provides the following services:

Nursing Practice Development

  • Practice development initiatives are led and coordinated by unit personnel working closely with clinical staff.
  • Evidence based practice is implemented through Policies/Protocols and Guidelines.
  • Clinical Nursing competencies are drafted & implemented.
  • Provision of support mechanisms for the development of expanded scope of nursing practice.

Support Clinical Practice

  • Clinical support is provided to staff at clinical level (particularly junior staff) to assist them to develop skills and knowledge, evaluate and to develop practice in their area.

Tissue Viability Expertise

  • Advice on wound management / tissue viability and pressure ulcer prevention and treatment is provided to all directorates/ wards.
  • Pressure Ulcer Prevalence studies are conducted quarterly and utilised to promote best practice in relation to pressure area care.

Co-ordination of the BSc Undergraduate Nursing Degree

  • Student nurse clinical placements are allocated and coordinated.
  • Student nurse clinical learning is facilitated and supported through student and preceptor support and education / training.
  • The Clinical Learning Environment is audited and evaluated with annual reports provided to the Nursing and Midwifery Board in Ireland (NMBI).

Audit & Research Expertise

  • Audit, research and quality improvement projects are led, coordinated and supported. 
  • Nursing research awareness, research activity and research utilisation are promoted and supported at clinical level. 
  • The Annual Multi disciplinary Research, Audit & Quality Improvement seminar is coordinated.
  • The Nursing Metrics audits are coordinated quaterly and results disseminated to all wards.

Nursing Newsletter

  • The quarterly “Nursing Matters” Newsletter is produced and disseminated.
