Respiratory Assessment Unit

What we do

In the Respiratory Assessment Unit a team of health professionals (Nurses and Physiotherapists) provide a number of services for persons with breathing (respiratory) difficulties such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis (COPD), asthma, bronchiectasis and lung fibrosis.

Some of the services we offer include

  • Respiratory Outreach – follow up at home for a selected group of patients with chronic respiratory disease after their admission with a chest infection, or in the community who have attended the GP and require further support
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation – a programme of exercise and education for patients who experience breathlessness arising out of a chest problem
  • Oxygen assessment clinics
  • Testing for TB – outpatient Mantoux testing
  • Respiratory Nurse Clinic – advice, education, support regarding living with your breathing condition.
  • Respiratory Physiotherapist Clinic – advice regarding exercising with a breathing condition and clearing phlegm

An answering machine service operates out of hours and during the day when the office is not manned. When leaving a message, please clearly state your name and your medical hospital number which is written on your appointment card.

Appointment Instructions

If you are on any inhalers, please bring them to your appointment. 

If you cannot make your appointment, please let us know as early as possible in order that your slot can be offered to somebody else.

Referral Procedures

Patients usually require a referral from one of the Consultant teams to see the staff of the Respiratory Assessment Unit. 

We can also accept referrals from GPs (except for Mantoux Tests) and other members of the multidisciplinary team. Please contact the RAU by telephone to discuss.
