Speech & Language Therapy

Outpatient Appointments

The Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Department at St. James's Hospital is dedicated primarily to inpatients.  However, we provide a service to outpatients within specific specialities across a number of locations:

  • Speech and Language Therapy Department
  • Robert Mayne Day Hospital
  • St. Luke's Radiation Oncology Centre at St. James's Hospital
  • Via designated clinics, e.g. Maxillo-Facial and ENT

Referral Procedure

All outpatients referred for SLT must be under the care of a St. James's consultant and be referred by a member of that medical team. No referrals are accepted directly from GPs currently. Self-referrals are not accepted. A waiting list applies for outpatients.

Referrals for videofluoroscopic examination of swallow / fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallow (FEES) must be made via the Speech and Language Therapy Department by the Speech and Language Therapist.  Only St. James’s Hospital patients are accepted for videofluoroscopy / FEES.

For children with velopharyngeal dysfunction, there is an open referrral service for community Speech and Language Therapists for second opinions. Please contact Aisling O'Dwyer, Senior Speech and Language Therapist on 01 416 2635 for further information as required.

Inpatients presenting with communication and/ or swallowing difficulties should be referred to the SLT department via the online system EPR.

Appointment Instructions

If you are an outpatient, you will receive an appointment directly from the SLT department. Generally most outpatient appointments are held in the department, unless otherwise notified. If for any reason you cannot attend the appointment, we request that patients give at least 24 hours' notice if they need to cancel an appointment. This can facilitate that the appointment may be offered to another patient on the waiting list. Patients who fail to attend appointments without giving prior notice may not be offered further appointments. If you have missed an appointment, please contact the department as soon as possible.
