Urological Cancer

What we do

The Urology Department provides a service for patients who suffer from problems with Kidney’s, Bladder, Prostate and general “Water-Works”.

In 2007, St. James’s diagnosed or treated 208 new urological cancers (Ref. Cancer Audit Programme, St. James’s Hospital)

  • Exponential increase in cancer workload
  • Specialist interest in minimally invasive cancer surgery
  • Electronic cancer referral available for prostate cancer
  • PET/ MRI scanner available
  • Long established weekly multidisciplinary team meeting, with MDT approach to management of all patients.
  • Specialist  medical oncologist for urological cancer
  • High volume centre for urological malignancy, with laproscopic approaches now well established within the unit
  • Funding (over 2 million euro) designated for the development of purpose built rapid access prostate cancer clinic and development of robotic-assisted prostate surgery
  • Academic interface with Professor Mark Lawlor and Professor Donal Hollywood at the IMM, and with Professor Bill Watson at the Conway Institute
  • Two full time clinical nurse specialists in urology

Referral Procedure

A referral letter from another consultant or GP must be sent to a urology consultant in order for an appointment date to be sent to a patient.

Electronic Prostate Cancer Referral
