Mary-Louise gives us a behind-the-scenes look at her role, sharing how she’s shaping education opportunities for staff and trainees in cancer care and cancer research. Helping to bridge the gap between education and everyday lives.
What is the primary purpose of the role?
My name is Mary-Louise Neligan and I have been working with TSJCI since the end of July. As Education Coordinator, my role focuses on developing oncology education opportunities for staff and trainees involved in cancer care, for those engaged in cancer research, and for patients and the public. I am responsible for the development, coordination and administration of oncology education programmes, international placement activity, and working with the Education Committee to deliver and strengthen TSJCI's education strategy.
What responsibilities will be involved?
The responsibilities of the role include undertaking research to identify oncology education needs, working closely with academic and clinical staff to support and coordinate the development of content for CME courses, and coordinating the TSJCI Seminar Series, which is due to commence in January 2026.
What relevant skills or experience does Mary-Louise bring - for example, expertise in developing major research projects?
I have worked in further education for the past eight years, most recently with iheed as Programme Manager for the RCPI Professional Diploma in Infectious Diseases. This role was a valuable experience, as I contributed to the full development and rollout of the programme — including module and learning outcome design, engagement with subject-matter experts, development and implementation of the assessment strategy, and involvement in course promotion through webinars. This provided strong insight into online programme development, CME delivery, LMS platforms and online assessment / proctoring systems. I am also currently pursuing a Professional Diploma in Digital Learning to further develop my expertise in online learning and instructional design.
How will this role contribute to the TSJCI programme?
As Ireland’s only Comprehensive Cancer Centre, education is central to TSJCI’s mission. The Education Coordinator role aims to expand, enhance and promote the education strategy, helping to solidify TSJCI’s leadership in oncology education, clinical care and research.
Prof Jacintha O’Sullivan, Education Director, TSJCI said ‘We are delighted to welcome Mary Louise into this important role for TSJCI, she will co-lead the development of innovative oncology education programmes that will benefit trainees across all disciplines both nationally and internationally'.
