Ultrasound Guided Biopsy / Drainage or Aspiration

In this examination, ultrasound is used as guidance for biopsies, drainage of fluid collections and cyst aspirations.

  • We generally ask patients to fast for 6-8 hours before a biopsy. However, for drainages and aspirations there is often no preparation needed. Please inform us at the time of booking if you are a diabetic or on regular medication.

  • Once the radiologist has explained the procedure he/she will then do a quick ultrasound scan to find the best location for the biopsy/drainage/cyst aspiration. Some local anaesthetic may then be used to numb the area of focus. The appropriate needle for the procedure is then advanced into the area.

  • Some patients do have some mild pain during/after the procedure. However, this is generally minimal.

  • The results will be sent to your referring doctor who will discuss the results with you.
