Research Impacts

At St James’s Hospital, research is not just confined to labs, it’s shaping how patients experience care. One example of this research was led by Min Seo Jung, Senior House Officer, Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery Department.

The research study was conducted at St James’s Hospital, analysing maxillofacial injuries related to e-scooter use. It compared two 9-month periods: before and after the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, which legalised e-scooter use on public roads from 20 May 2024.

Examining this data, the team found that the legislation may have helped reduce injuries among minors and head trauma. However, the overall injury rate and severity increased.

This study highlights the need for ongoing surveillance, public education, and policy refinement.
