How are podcasts helping empower patients?

Research Impacts

At St James’s Hospital, research is not just confined to labs, it’s shaping how patients experience care. One innovative example is a new podcast developed to help patients prepare for their surgery.

Designed by a multidisciplinary team, Operation Preparation offers clear, accessible information to guide patients through the surgical journey, from pre-op preparation to recovery. It aims to reduce anxiety, improve understanding, and empower patients to take an active role in their care.

What makes this project stand out is its strong research foundation. The team used evidence-based approaches to design the content, ensuring it meets the real needs of patients. Going forward, patients will be invited to complete surveys to evaluate the podcast’s impact on their experience and outcomes. These insights will help refine the resource and inform future patient education strategies.

This initiative is part of a broader commitment at St James’s to use research to improve healthcare delivery, making care more informed, compassionate, and effective.
