Please call the Haemophilia and Hepatology Ward on 01 4103132 or via St James’s Hospital switchboard on (01) 410 3000. A nurse will triage your call and advise you on further action. 

If you have a bleeding disorder and happen to attend an ED or another hospital for treatment:

• Show your bleeding disorder alert card to the treating doctor or nurse.
• If you don't have your card with you, identify that you have a bleeding disorder to the healthcare professional.
• If possible you or a relative should phone the NCC to inform us of your admission/ treatment in ED or in another hospital.

For Emergency Care
In the event of an emergency please contact your nearest emergency department without delay.

• Patient consultations in the outpatient clinics are generally in person at present. Telephone or video call can be arranged in situations where appropriate to do so (with consultant approval).
• Phlebotomy / Blood testing remains restricted to blood tests required as determined by the NCC medical team and is carried out in the HHAU.
• Planned and urgent treatments are being given in the HHAU by appointment only. The unit will operate from 08:30-17:00hrs Monday – Friday only.
• If you need an assessment and treatment out of hours - please phone the Haemophilia and Hepatology (H&H) Ward on 01-410 3132 . A nurse will then carry out a telephone assessment and triage you. 
• Where possible you should attend the HHAU on your own. If you require assistance, a person may accompany you but may be asked to wait outside of the HHAU area until you are ready to be discharged.

• We are a JAM friendly hospital and if you need just as much time and patients as you need in public or social situations, just let us know. More information on JAM is available here.

All referrals are triaged by the consultant within 10 working days of receipt. Triaged referrals are categorised as either urgent or routine. The patient will be contacted with an appointment letter and a map of our exact location.

All clinics are consultant-led.

Referral letter must include contact details for all patients along with any investigations, scans, blood results and relevant correspondence. 
Rescheduled or cancelled appointments can be arranged by contacting us.

We only accept self referrals from patients who have a family member registered in the NCC with a history of

-          A bleeding disorder

-          HHT

-          Protein S, C or Antithrombin deficiency

To shine a light on the journey experienced by young people when they transfer their care from a paediatric (children’s) hospital to an adult hospital, the National Coagulation Centre (NCC) at St James’s Hospital and Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) created the below short video.

In this video, David recalls his transition of care from CHI Crumlin to the NCC and explains how he overcame his anxieties from meeting with his consultant alone to finding a mode of transport to get to his appointment. David was encouraged to build and grow in all aspects of his life, both in and out of hospital. The NCC encourages young adults to develop their skills for self-management, empowering them to set their own personal goals and, importantly, achieve them.
