Patient Experience

Our goal is to harness the critical mass of our internationally renowned academic and clinical researchers in the field of immunology and cancer. This cancer centre, the first in Ireland, brings together our significant expertise and ambition to develop better, more effective treatments leading to better outcomes for all our cancer patients.

The field of cancer immunology and immunotherapy has grown rapidly in recent years. Immune-based cancer therapies have changed the face of cancer treatment for patients, their families and their medical teams. Immunotherapy is now used to treat a diverse range of solid and haematological cancers, with an increasing focus on difficult to treat cancers. Long term control and cures have been reported for some patients, but many unanswered questions remain, including the identification of patients who are most likely to benefit from immunotherapy treatment. Researchers in the Trinity St. James’s Cancer Institute aim to address this and other key issues including the identification of novel and more effective immune based cancer treatments, gaining a better understanding of how the tumour microenvironment and combination treatments can affect the anti-tumour immune response, which will ultimately lead to better treatment strategies for cancer patients. Importantly, gaining a deeper insight into the multitude of  mechanisms by which a cancer is naturally resistant or becomes resistant to immunotherapy treatments will allow more tailored and effective treatments in the near future.  Immunology is a globally recognised research strength of Trinity College Dublin and a  full spectrum of fundamental, translational and clinical immunology research, together with immunotherapy clinical trials covering a range of malignancies is ongoing at TSJCI. We will continue to translate our research findings through to clinical trials in an efficient and timely manner.  Ireland has the potential to lead on novel immunotherapeutic interventions for improved cancer patient care.
